One day when I was five years old I wanted so much to have a horseback ride. I begged my mother for one.
There was a very tame horse my grandfather had given to my older brother when the horse got too old for “Gamp” to use.
Mom went out and caught old Susie, brought her to the gate, and put me on her. Susie had other ideas.
She walked straight over to the barn and lay down on the manure pile on the pasture side of the barnyard fence. Once I got my legs free, Susie got up and went back to grazing.
Mom thought she was a very smart horse. She picked a soft spot to put me off.
