Kids were the school janitors

From our March 2012 issue

By Doreen (Hamel) Handley – Rosetown, Sask.

I attended one-room Kensington School near Fiske, Sask. where the teacher taught Grades 1 to 10.

My friend, Laura, and I did the janitor work at the school after class. We cleaned off the blackboards so the teacher would have a good start in the morning.

The pupils would take turns putting our flag up on the tower every morning.

On Saturday afternoon, Laura and I made a special trip to the school and moved the desks to clean the floor with a wet mop. Our pay was $2.50 each.

When we got paid I’d look at the Eaton’s catalogue and wonder what I would buy. How times have changed.
