Smell woke dad up

From our October 2012 issue

When we were young we had no electricity or running water on our farm. We had an outhouse leading through the garden into the maple trees.

One late evening when some of us were in bed my brothers, John and Joe, went out for the last trip before going to bed. They were out for a while and when they came back to the house we knew what they were up to…they were messing with a skunk. The smell woke dad up.

Mom was still up, and boy, what a commotion. The boys had to take their boots out and undress. They learned their lesson to leave the skunks alone.

We covered our heads in our feather tick to go to sleep.
