Carlton Junction School was located four miles south of Carlyle in southeast Saskatchewan.
My first teacher was Miss Alice Nichol. Alice now is Mrs. Van Hiklome of Manor, Sask. Alice was 100 years old in July 2012 and I was delighted to be invited to her birthday celebration. My husband, brother, and I attended this great occasion.
I started school April 3, 1934. The following winter was very cold and we lived three miles away. There were no winter roads or snowploughs then. However, our kind friends Mr. and Mrs. William Wood boarded Miss Nichol and they took me in also.
Miss Nichol shared her bed with this seven-year-old. I owe those people so much for helping me get started on my education.
Miss Nichol was a wonderful teacher. With assistance from her son and nearby friends, she still lives alone in Manor.
