Soldier To Veteran

From our March 2014 issuee

By Wesley Sliwka – Trossachs, Sask.

With precision steps to the beat of drums
Their polished boots keep marching on
Chests filled with pride, hearts full of love
For their people and our native land.

In times of trouble and winds of war
They preserve our peace and defend our shores.
Some will die in the field with honour
The rest will come home to Canadian soil.

With dignity, they have done their best
To complete the mission of our country’s request.
Medals will be pinned upon their chests
The cheering will stop, the drums will rest.

They are discarded like relics of war
For they are not soldiers anymore.
In deafening silence reality grows
They have been forgotten and it wounds their souls.
